ASTM International gives specific guidelines in ASTM E1745-17 and ASTM E1643 for the use, installation, and inspection of vapor barriers used under concrete slabs. If it doesn’t, a moisture imbalance could eventually cause a flooring failure. However, the vapor barrier under the slab must have a lower degree of permeance than the flooring (or floor covering) above the slab. While a water vapor permeance of less than 0.3 perms is recommended, a higher permeance rate is usually considered acceptable for residential use. The acceptable degree of vapor barrier permeability depends on the application. What’s an acceptable degree of vapor barrier permeability? In this article, we will be using the term ‘vapor barrier’. Vapor barriers are less permeable than vapor retarders. However, strictly speaking, they aren’t the same thing. You’ll hear people using the terms ‘vapor barrier’ and ‘vapor retarder’ interchangeably. Impermeable vapor barriers are those with a rating of 0.1 perm or less while class II vapor retarders are those with a rating greater than 0.1 perm and less than 1.0 perm. The higher the number, the more permeable the material. Vapor barriers have varying degrees of permeability, expressed in perms. Vapor barrier permeability is expressed in perms. However, there are underlayments that act as vapor barriers. Note: A vapor barrier is not the same as an underlayment. Vapor barriers are a way to keep moisture from getting into the concrete. This is why a vapor barrier under concrete is essential. ![]() If you have a concrete floor that’s in continuous contact with a source of moisture, you’re going to have problems. There’s only one-way moisture leaves concrete, though, and that’s via its surface. Of course, there’s also the moisture that was in the original concrete mixture. Moisture enters concrete in a variety of ways, including via the ground, from humidity in the air, and through leaky plumbing that passes through a slab. If you’ve ever had a problem with a basement floor (or any concrete floor), you know the kind of damage that too much moisture can cause. It needs to dry and then stay dry to avoid flooring problems. Vapor barriers are used because while fresh concrete is poured wet, it’s not supposed to stay that way. Vapor barrier installation install#Install A Dehumidifier: Installing an energy efficient, self-draining crawl space dehumidifier will keep your space dry. This is also the best time to install crawl space insulation on your walls or floors. A durable liner will allow for servicemen to use the space without damage while transforming your crawl space into usable storage space. Encapsulate & Insulate The Crawl Space: To stop moisture from passing through your floors and porous concrete walls, a crawl space liner should be installed. This will help your floors stay even and stop any structural sagging upstairs. Repair The Structure: If your crawl space is sagging or damaged by prolonged mold and rot, the next step is to install crawl space support jacks to help restore your structure. This eliminates flooding water from your crawl space, but moisture can still enter directly through the concrete and floor in the form of water vapor. Remove Any Standing Water Sources: The next step is to eliminate any sources of flooding in your crawl space by installing a crawl space drain and sump pump system. However, water can still enter your crawlspace in many ways. Install Airtight Doors & Vent Covers: Sealing your crawl space doors and vents stops the cycle of cold, humidity and moisture entering from the outside air.Steps to Installing A Crawl Space Vapor Barrier ![]()
